I am a thinking person. I like to thoughtfully examine and analyze noteworthy events, people, movies, books, essays, songs, countries, places of interests, food, restaurants, alcoholic beverages, politicians, animals, cosmic radiation and supernovas, endangered bluefin tuna and algae bioluminiscence...you get the idea. Whatever makes this world interesting and thought-provoking, I will endeavor to write about it. I intend to make this journal as reader-centric as possible, to write about subjects that interest and matter to you and to stir a reaction (comments!) from you.
I have been reticent to keep an online journal mainly because of two reasons: 1) I do not wish to unintentionally offend any friends or family members, by writing about my feelings and thoughts of them, or unconsciously revealing their personal and intimate details, thus breaking their confidence in me; and 2) I do not wish my journal-keeping style to regress to that when I was 20, when I was full of angst, self-doubt, loneliness, sadness--all those gems that accompany adolescence and early "adult"hood. I promise not to make this blog too confessional. I'm not at all comfortable with revealing my innermost vulnerable self, wide open to the Big Bad Internet, accessible to anyone. There seems to be some very hostile, very vindictive people out there, who are apparently emboldened by the anonymity of the Internet.
I also don't want to use this journal as a means of gaining approval. A writer whose name I unfortunately forget, said once, "Do not write to be loved." I also do not want to ramble, a la Cary Tennis from salon.com. My aim is to be opinionated but with some journalistic integrity, to some degree, like the thoughtful and smart commentators of This American Life and All Things Considered, or a Frank Rich, minus the politics (most of the time). I promise to do my fact-checking before making any claim, and I encourage you to counter me if you believe I'm wrong.
I would love for this journal to be a forum by which we can exchange ideas and get to know each other a litle bit better. One of the chief pleasures in life, I find, is learning, and I am quite assured that I associate with people who can teach me something new with each conversation. But ultimately, of course, this journal is selfish, because I find it immensely satisfying to transform nebulous thoughts and feelings into the written word. I love to write.
